What is the difference between nominal and dimensional lumber? Are there different grades of lumber? What are the grades of framing lumber? Lumber mills ink-stamp each board with a lumber grade. Softwoods are divided into two categories: dimensional lumber, with a grade based on strength , and appearance boards , which are typically used for woodworking projects.
