Soft maple is creamy white and has a straight grain. Rays are narrower than in Hard Maple. It is about softer than Hard Maple. It takes a stain well and can be finished to look a lot like Cherry. Soft is a relative term, and is only used to differentiate it from hard maple (Acer saccharum).

For many applications, soft maple ’s hardness is sufficient, and its reduced density generally means it’s easier to work with and machine than hard maple. S oft maple lumber resembles hard maple given its tight grains, but is a less dense, easily worked lumber.
