Soft maple is creamy white and has a straight grain. Rays are narrower than in Hard Maple. It is about softer than Hard Maple. It takes a stain well and can be finished to look a lot like Cherry. Soft is a relative term, and is only used to differentiate it from hard maple (Acer saccharum).

S oft maple lumber resembles hard maple given its tight grains, but is a less dense, easily worked lumber. I do like the color and figure that I can get locally in soft maple and have used it for legs on benches, but where strength is necessary, I stick with hard maple.
