Is it okay to have an ungrounded light fixture? How do you wire up a light? How to wire a new switch and ceiling light? Light Fixtures and the Ground Wire. Electrical wiring in some older homes does not have a ground wire for outlets ans switches, and some older homes have ground wires that are bonded behind the electrical box.
If the box is metal then attach the fixture ground wire to the box. If necessary, use wire strippers to remove the insulation from the light fixture’s electric wires. Wrap the copper or silver ground wires from the light fixture around the ground screw.
Then, connect it to the supply ground wire of the junction box with a wire connector. Connect the black or red current wires and the white neutral wires. The wire coming from supply has black (hot ), white (neutral) and copper (ground ). The light fixture comes with a metal bracket for attaching to the electrical box that has a green screw The light fixture has black, white and copper wires. The ground wire is designed to protect you.
In the event that the live wire comes loose and touches the light fixture , the ground wire diverts the power and blows the breaker , instead of you feeling an electrical shock when you touch the fixture. That’s the only purpose the ground wire serves. It’s a safety feature. Typically the ground wire is attached to the metal housing of the light fixture.
In some cases, the ground wire extends through out the light fixture to junction box locations where the light socket wiring is spliced together. As a general rule, when doing home wiring projects, get in the habit of pig-tailing ground wires together and connecting one end to each fixture. A ground light fixture wire provides security and ensures safety to individuals whenever a wiring circuit malfunctions or fails. Realistically, your light fixture may pick up ground from the electrical box with or without the wire, if the electrical box is metal.
The bare wire is the ground for the metal canopy. The green screw is the ground for the fixture bracket. They all need to be connected.
The easiest way is to attach a short bare (or green) wire to the green screw and then attach the four ground wires together. This wire features copper conductors and has a 300-Volt maximum capacity. The Southwire Company 1ft.
Your new light fixture will have a ground wire (green coated or bare copper). But if you have an older metal box, there may not be a ground wire inside the box to connect to. If the wires emerge alongside a stud or other framing member, you can screw a metal box directly to the stud.
However, it’s likely that the light fixture was mounted in the middle of a stud cavity, which makes mounting a box that can support the weight of the fixture more difficult. Whether in the US or not, it is highly recommended that all metal parts are grounded. Do not run new wire without a ground. Case 1: Existing wire does not have a ground , fixture does not have a termination for a ground wire. However, the ballast has a terminal for live, neutral, and ground wires (see photo), which is confusing.
