In ecology and forestry, yellow pine refers to a number of conifer species which tend to grow in similar plant communities and yield similar strong wood. In the Western United States, yellow pine refers to Jeffrey pine or ponderosa pine. The four species are: Shortleaf Pine (Pinus echinata), Slash Pine (Pinus ellioti), Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris), and Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda). All share similar characteristics such as high density and an abrupt earlywood to latewood transition which gives them a distinct grain pattern.
